A foreign man had his metal detector taken away from him by maritime police on Salema beach (Vila do Bispo) last week as using one without a licence is illegal. Unlike other countries, a metal detector can only be used in Portugal with a licence from the Direção-Geral do Património Cultural (DGPC), the entity in charge of cultural heritage.
