Forces scrapped

Portugal’s Brigada de Trânsito, road traffic police and GNR Brigada Fiscal, fiscal brigade, are to be scrapped.

Prime Minister José Sócrates announced the measure as part of an overall reorganisation of GNR units.

With regards to PSP police, the Prime Minister said there would now be one special unit instead of three and that a new department would be set up called the Department of Criminal Investigation.

Sócrates also said that it was likely that the police force would be reorganised in Lisbon and Porto and that the creation of a shared security force with international links would be set up.

The Portuguese government will invest 400 million euros on streamlining and modernising the country’s police and security forces and traffic policing will be shared by the GNR and PSP, which could too eventually be amalgamated.
