Yet another judge involved in cases pending against former banker Ricardo Salgado has dismissed defence counsels’ request for the realisation of an independent medical inquiry into Mr Salgado’s condition of Alzheimer’s disease. Pedro Correia, the ‘newbie’ called in to decide the gigantic BES/ GES investigation has ruled that for pre-trial purposes it is irrelevant whether the defendant has Alzheimer’s now. What is relevant is whether or not he committed the crimes levelled against him on the occasions specified (when Alzheimer’s disease was not an issue). This is a line taken previously by other judges in other cases, all of them centring on allegations of corruption. The reasoning of the defence team however is that Mr Salgado’s condition precludes him from fully exercising his right to a defence. Hopes centre on getting all the charges/ cases against the former BES boss thrown out.
