Footballer Lee Bowyer, who has played for England, West Ham, Leeds, Newcastle and Birmingham City, has shown his support for the Algarve by making a donation to the Lar São Vicente home for mentally and physically disabled people in Albufeira.
Lee Bowyer and his wife Gemma were in the Algarve recently for a wedding blessing at St Luke’s Church in Monte Palhagueira, where they learnt about the work of Father Bob Bates with the Lar São Vicente in Albufeira.
Father Bob Bates spoke about his walk across the length of the Algarve to raise money for the home last year and the couple have now decided to make a donation to be able to take the residents on a trip out.
Lee Bowyer said: “We first fell in love with the Algarve when we came on holiday to the region and bought our own property here about five years ago.
“We hope to be able to spend more time in the Algarve in the future and after our conversation with Father Bob, we wanted to make a contribution to the needy people in the area, and the Lar São Vicente and its residents provided an ideal partnership.”
Fundraiser Linda Mühleisen told the Algarve Resident: “It really is amazing that there are still lovely people out there who are willing to help. Lee and Gemma appreciated being able to visit the Lar where they saw the constant battle facing the team to be able to maintain the home for the residents.”
