Football – Portimao up

Following the long drawn out saga of whether relegated Portimonense were to take Salgueiros’ place in the Liga da Honra [Portugal’s First Division] or not, which went to the PFA’s Court of Appeal, the tribunal has confirmed Salgueiros’ exclusion due to financial irregularities. This has saved Portimonense from the arduous task of fighting its way back up through the lower leagues.Salgueiros will, in all likelihood, cease to exist, with coach and players refusing to play in the II Divisão B.

Portimão president João Sintra, on the other hand, welcomed the decision, considering that justice has been done. Now that the club’s status has been guaranteed, the search for a midfielder and a striker to complete the present squad has already begun. Portimão join Olhão as the second Algarvean Club in the Liga de Honra – both sides meeting on the first day of the new season, later this month.
