Football academy inaugurated in Lagos

By Nuno Glassbrook

A football academy backed by former Benfica and England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson has opened in Lagos.

Sven’s son Johan Eriksson told the Algarve Resident: “We want to involve the local community in enjoying the sport more.”

The Cascade Performance Sports Academy, which officially opened on April 15, has the biggest FIFA-certified pitches in the Algarve, with FA qualified coaches and under the supervision of Sven-Göran Eriksson.

The academy’s head of Marketing, Julien Jaquenoud, said: “The academy is purpose-built with high quality facilities. The location of the resort and the capability to adapt to the different needs is what makes it different.”

Training sessions take place every Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm and cost €10.

The age group catered for is six to 16 but the academy says nobody will be turned away.

At present, an Easter camp is running at the venue, ending on April 25.

The Cascade Performance Sports Academy’s objective is to become the top sporting facility in the region, attracting an international audience but also reaching out to the local community, giving it the opportunity to benefit from the sports facilities on site.

It hopes to bring professional teams to the Algarve for their pre-season training camps and to have a football school where youngsters can enjoy the sport as well as improving their skills under professional supervision.

Future plans for the Cascade Performance Sports Academy include the creation of a youth team.
