The strange case of food poisonings in Leiria continues to baffle authorities, who put the number of victims today at 136. It seems the one food these people all consumed was a ‘broa’, a kind of traditional sweet bread. While the offending brand has been removed from sale, public health officials still have to try and find out what went wrong in the manufacturing process (to ensure it doesn’t happen again). The symptoms most people reported (all of whom recovered relatively quickly and with no apparent lasting effects) were “mainly neurological – the drying of mucus membranes in the mouth, dilation of pupils, blurred vision, dizziness, mental confusion and loss of muscle power”.
