Food crisis

THE UN has warned that the global rise in food prices has pushed an estimated 40 million more people into hunger this year.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), there are now 963 million undernourished people around the world.

Jacques Diouf, head of the FAO, said the situation was unacceptable “at the dawn of the 21st Century”.

He called on Barack Obama, the US’s soon-to-be President, to hold a summit in 2009 to end the crisis situation.
