Algarve Wine Society members gathered on the terrace of the Dutch owned Florian restaurant at Valverde in Quinta do Lago last week for a special food and wine pairing event.
While they enjoyed a glass of sparkling Bairrada, restaurant chef/proprietor Piet Warink cooked joints of North American entrecôtes on the revolutionary Big Green Egg barbecue. The evening’s wine had been sponsored by Quinta do Zambujeiro, a winery in the Alentejo, and the group was honoured to have its Swiss owner Emil Strickler present. He was accompanied by his general manager Nuno Malta, oenologist Luis Lourinho and his agent in the Algarve, Miguel Barnabé of Decant Vinhos.
A meal of five courses was served by Florian staff and each course was devised to accompany Zambujeiro’s wines.
The next event in the Algarve Wine Society’s calendar will be in early May when 33 members will travel to the Bordeaux vineyards for a week.
