Folar takes centre stage at Algarve Easter fairs

Portugal’s famous Easter cake “folar” is the star of several fairs taking place in the Algarve this weekend.

Starting in the western Algarve, Odeceixe will host a fair featuring delicious cakes and sweets made by local confectioners between March 25-27.

On the same days, the small town of São Marcos da Serra in the Silves borough will hold its famous Feira do Folar. Besides showcasing its folar – one of its specialties alongside its bread – the event will also feature concerts, dances and religious celebrations.

In the east Algarve, Alcoutim will showcase some of the region’s sweet delights at the town’s 11th Feira de Doces d’Avó. Taking place March 25 and 26, the event will feature all types of traditional sweets, including “filhós” (a kind of fried doughnut sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon) and “nógados” (dried fruit sweets).

Other smaller Easter fairs will be taking place across the Algarve, so keep an eye out for an event near you.
