FOCUS – Derby news

Last year’s champion apprentice, Ryan Moore, will have his first ride in England’s premier classic aboard John Dunlop’s Unfurled this Saturday. Experience is everything at Epsom, so the Predominate Stakes winner can safely be ruled out. Stablemate Kong has the assistance of Richard Hughes, but, in his case, the horse is too green. Either Johnny Murtagh or supersub Darryl Holland will partner favourite Motivator, depending on the outcome of Murtagh’s appeal against suspension; but, again, the horse does not give the impression of having the temperament for the big occasion. Richard Quinn has chosen David Elsworth’s The Geezer above Unfurled and Kong, but, along with Kieren Fallon’s choice of mounts Oratorio, Gypsy King, Grant Central and Scorpion, all will have their work cut out to beat Dubawi given that rain is forecast. It would be lucky 13 for Frankie Dettori, whose best finish in 12 attempts so far has been a second place on Tamure in 1995. Last year’s winning trainer, Michael Stoute, will be without a runner after withdrawing both Kalamkar and Mountain High.
