The regional health authority has issued a recommendation to the population who may be at risk of catching flu to be vaccinated.
According to the Administração Regional de Saúde do Algarve (ARS), the elderly, those suffering with chronic illnesses, children over the age of six and health professionals should get a flu vaccine during this month.
Although it does not protect against the H1N1 virus, the vaccine is effective in avoiding 75 per cent of normal flu cases.
For more information or to obtain the flu vaccine, residents are advised by the ARS to visit their local health centre.
