PORTUGAL AND Spain are to undertake a simulation exercise based on the emergence of a flu pandemic.
Scheduled to take place in the second quarter of this year, the initiative is designed to test the two countries’ respective national preparation and response plans.
The Alto Comissariado da Saúde, the high commission for health has revealed that the decision was taken during the first meeting of the Comissão de Acompanhamento Partitária, a joint commission that aims to promote co-operation between Portugal and Spain on health policy. Exact details as to the format and scale of the exercise are yet to be announced.
It was also concluded at the meeting that the two countries need to tighten their collaboration with regard to pharmaceuticals and biomedicine research.
Other topics of discussion included the promotion of health with special focus on prevention of tobacco addiction, obesity and the promotion and co-operation strategy at a regional level between the autonomous communities of Spain and the regional health administrations of Portugal.
Those present at the meeting representing Portugal included the High Commissioner for Health, Maria do Céu Machado and the Director General for Health, Francisco George.
