Floods cause road havoc

Drivers faced yet more misery midweek as over 50 roads throughout the country were hit by floodwater.
Santarém was the worst district affected with a total of 23 roads declared impassable, and the little community of Reguengo do Alviela completely cut off.
After a weekend of storms, high winds and driving rain, the country has been plunged into the worst kind of winter weather.
Lisbon sat under a wet grey cloud on Tuesday, while surrounding areas were encircled by fog.
Further north, in Coimbra, communities struggled through the nightmare of mudslides, as well as flooding, while Leiria too was hit by rising water levels.
Snow added to people’s misery in Castelo Branco, while the forecast for the rest of the week continues wet.
The Algarve side-stepped the worst of this week’s conditions, but rain, high winds and cold have been the order of the day.
As the country inches towards the weekend, forecasts are far from bright.
IPMA, the Institute of Sea and Atmosphere, says Friday will be overcast with periods of rain, sometimes heavy, particularly in the areas of Minho and Douro Litoral (coastal area).
The Serra de Estrela is due for more snow, with winds throughout the country gathering force – gusts of up to 90kph expected at Cabo Raso, Cascais, and reaching 110kph in the North and Centre.
