Flimsy plastic bags for fruit, veg and bread to be outlawed by 2020

Parliament has approved a bill to ban all ‘light plastic bags’ used for the purposes of selling fruit, vegetables and bread.

The bill, proposed by the Greens and backed unanimously, also seeks to outlaw disposable styrofoam packing.

Say reports, these single-use plastics will be taken out of use by June 2020 as long as the environmental commission gives its go-ahead.

Stores and stallholders will have to find “more sustainable materials”.
