Flavours of Caldeirão in São Brás de Alportel

A gastronomic event that sees local restaurants serving some of its best traditional recipes is taking place in São Brás de Alportel until Monday, April 22.

Entitled ‘Sabores do Caldeirão’ (Flavours of Caldeirão) due to the borough’s proximity to the Serra do Caldeirão, the event is held as a “way of attracting more holidaymakers and promoting the Mediterranean diet of the Algarve”.

As local mayor Vítor Guerreiro says, “one of the treasures we have in our borough is our Mediterranean gastronomy”.

However, this year only five restaurants are taking part in the event – Casa de Pasto Adega Nunes, Sabores do Campo, 4 à Mesa, Rui’s Steakhouse and O Marquês.

“Some restaurants already have many clients and their own menu, so they have trouble meeting our demands for this event,” the mayor explained during a press conference on Monday.

At Adega Nunes, clients can order fried rabbit with garlic, chickpeas and mint while the specialty at 4 à Mesa is a meat, cheese and asparagus-filled folhado (puff pastry) served with presunto ham, vegetables and honey.

O Marquês is serving a delicious lamb stew known as ‘ensopado de borrego’ with stir-fried mushrooms and aromatic herbs. At Rui’s Steakhouse, the special menu includes goat cheese with a strawberry and carob honey carpaccio, rack of lamb with bread crust and herbs and a carob pie with red berries.

Sabores do Campo is serving a goat cheese variation of the traditional Algarve sweet Dom Rodrigo and oven-baked boar with thyme and honey.

Apart from enjoying delicious food, clients can also win vouchers for free meals.

The mayor says that the event is here to stay and that the council will have a meeting with the participating restaurants at the end of the initiative to discuss whether it can be further improved.
