Five people hurt after car drives straight into Monforte café

Car allegedly drove intentionally after driver was refused a drink

Extraordinary CCTV footage is doing the rounds today after a car allegedly drove intentionally into a Monforte café, in the district of Portalegre, hitting at least five people.

The footage carried by SIC Notícias appears to have been tampered with to some extent, but the minutes before (since removed from the clip online) show there was a relative sense of  ‘unease’ among those in the café.

According to some reports this is because the driver had only some time previously left the establishment after being denied a drink due to being already “under the effects of alcohol”.

Local reports say one of the injured is the town’s firechief. The seriously injured person is the 38-year-old driver, who was arrested at the scene once authorities arrived.

The incident happened last night, at 9.44pm, with the driver and one of the injured people later being transported to Portalegre hospital.

The case is now in the hands of PJ judicial police.

As for the café, it suffered untold damages, as can be seen from the video footage.
