Following on from the post-Christmas death-toll on Portugal’s roads (click here), New Year saw five people die in accidents up and down the country.
According to GNR police, this is the same number as last year, though the number of accidents (427) was down on figures for 2015.
Fatalities were registered in Aveiro (2), Santarém, Viseu and Leiria (each with one road death), while Porto was the borough with most accidents (62), followed by Braga (46) and Aveiro (45).
