Fishing traditions come alive at Benagil restaurant

Located in the quiet valley of Benagil (Carvoeiro) overlooking the ocean, the long-established O Pescador Restaurant has re-opened under new management on Saturday, June 22.

Owner André Aleixo, a Carvoeiro resident with 10 years’ experience in the restaurant industry, welcomed family and friends to the late-afternoon inauguration party, which served to introduce the concept of the restaurant-cum-lounge-bar.

Having completely refurbished the premises but maintaining the architectural features of the once traditional Algarve home, André said the idea was to bring the sea theme not only to the décor, which is bright and airy in white and sand tones, but above all to the table, with the menu featuring several fish dishes such as the famous cataplana, seafood rice (pre-order required) and stuffed lobster (pre-order required), “all prepared with the freshest ingredients”, said André.

“I grew up watching my grandfather, who was a fisherman, preparing the catch of the day for our family meals. I want to re-live these much-treasured memories through this restaurant and share the local fishing traditions with my customers,” he said.

But meat lovers have not been forgotten, with highlights on the menu including filet mignon with gorgonzola, port and pepper sauce, and filet mignon kebab with bacon and tiger prawns. The wine menu is extensive with special focus on Portuguese wines from the Douro, Dão, Alentejo and the Algarve.

With a seating capacity for 50 people, the size of the restaurant is “just ideal”, said André. “The ambience is intimate yet casual, which means customers can truly relax while enjoying their meal or just a drink on the terrace as if they were in their own home.”

Diners can also admire the art of fishing through the paintings of Virgílio Raposo, a local artist who happens to be André’s uncle. Decorating the walls of the restaurant, the paintings are available for sale.

André explained that combining gastronomy with art is a concept he intends to continue and other exhibitions can be expected in the future.

The restaurant is open daily from 12 noon to 3pm and from 5pm to 1am.
