MANY PORTS across the Algarve are poorly maintained and, in some cases, appear to have been abandoned, say fishermen.
The ports at Olhão, Vila Real de Santo António and Portimão are regarded by many fishermen as the worst in the Algarve, but are among the most used for mooring boats.
Fishermen are angry that they pay money each month to keep their boats there in appalling conditions when their money is not being used to maintain the ports.
The fishermen have lodged official complaints against Instituto Portuário e dos Transportes Marítimos (IPTM), the entitiy responsible for the maintenance and management of the ports in question. The complaints highlight that warehouses are full of rubbish, do not have water, electricity or bathroom facilities and are rarely cleaned.
