A 52-year-old fisherman gathering sea barnacles (perceves) from the rocks on the islet of Ato Pau in Carrapateira fell into the sea and was swept to his death.
The body of José Francisco Elviro, who lived in Lagos, was recovered by a lifeboat crew 1800 metres offshore, three hours after the accident last Saturday.
The victim, said to be an experienced shellfish gatherer, had been fishing with his 72-year-old father who raised the alarm. He had been wearing a diving suit when he fell a short distance from a rock.
