A fisherman disappeared last week in Carrapateira, near Aljezur, after being swept away by a large wave. The victim, identified as José do Nascimento Manuel, 62, a resident of Calvário, Lagoa, was known as an experienced sporting fisherman who had used this particular site frequently in the past.
Manuel was accompanied by his son and a friend when he was hit by the wave. “When the wave came, I was totally drenched and I didn’t notice that José had been swept away. It was only when I heard his son crying out, that I noticed he had fallen. It was all so fast,” said Albano Magalhães Baptista, a friend of the fisherman.
A search was carried out at the scene by the maritime police, volunteer bombeiros from Aljezur and lifeguards from Sagres, but it was unsuccessful.
