Fisherman ‘rammed in police chase’ dies after two weeks in coma

The tragic end to a disastrous chase across Ria Formosa involving maritime police and a mystery ‘unlicensed’ fishing boat has seen an innocent third party whose boat ‘got in the way’ die in hospital.

Aldemiro da Conceição Nabiça, described by reports as originally from Alvor, had been in a coma since the accident that saw him and his 40-year-old son jettisoned into the freezing waters of Ria Formosa just before sunrise on Friday, January 12 (click here).

The case is now in the hands of the Public Ministry.

As reports explained at the time, there was nothing the pursuing police boat could have done to avoid Nabiça’s boat, bearing in mind the speed of the chase and the fact that visibility was limited by darkness.

Local group SOS Ria Formosa posted after the accident that it’s thoughts were with not only the injured fisherman but the maritime police agents who were only “doing their duty”.

To date, there has been no news on the boat that set this tragedy in motion. It simply “disappeared into the darkness” when police stopped to help Nabiça and his son.
