Fisherman plunges 40 m to death from rocks above Zavial beach, Vila do Bispo

A 44-year-old fisherman, described by friends as “passionate about the sport”, plunged to his death last Friday afternoon from cliffs above Zavial beach, Vila do Bispo.

The Romanian man – resident in Figueira – was fishing with three friends at a point known as Torre when he is understood to have slipped and fallen first on to the rocks below, and then into the sea.

The alert over his disappearance was received by Lagos ports authority a little before 8pm, and a search and rescue team set out instantly by sea, reports TVI24.

The man was sighted by 8.30pm and recovered and taken to Baleeira port in Sagres, added the station, suggesting he may still have been alive at the time.

INEM medical staff carried out resuscitation efforts and the man was then taken to Lagos hospital, where he was declared dead.
