Fiscal benefits: government wants to cut €90 million

Portuguese tax law is complicated, with 542 ‘fiscal benefits’ which can lead some people to paying a great deal less than the government would like.

Thus moves are underway to crack down on the regime to the tune – in an initial phase – of €90 million by next year.

Finance minister Mário Centeno explains: “We all want to know where common resources are applied. Why do some contribute and others not”.

The government’s study will be taken on board as part of the 2022 Stability Programme.

Explains SIC television today, fiscal benefits are viewed by tax authorities as “a form of minefield where taxpayers can save many millions of euros every year.

“Just in 2018, almost 12 billion euros was ‘saved’ by Portuguese taxpayers, equivalent to 6% of GDP”.
