The first stone has been laid at the Almancil crèche being built on Rua do Centro Comunitário.
The project is the brainchild of the Associação Social e Cultural de Almancil (ASCA) and is backed by Loulé council and the IKEA group (click here).
The crèche will provide places for 157 children up to the age of five and will also include an amphitheatre and several outdoor playgrounds and gardens.
It will cost around €1.5 million to bring to life, €200,000 of which is being covered by IKEA.
“This crèche is the first social project that IKEA is backing in the south of the country and we hope to have the opportunity to contribute to the development and sustainability of the region, starting with children, who are so important to us at IKEA,” said IKEA Portugal boss Fernando Caldas.
Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) has also organised several fundraising events in benefit of the project.
“When we heard about this ambitious project,” said AIRC Chair of Community Services Peter Hinze in March, “our members wanted to organise some events so that we could, in our small way, contribute, especially as the crèche will benefit so many local families, including disadvantaged families.”
