First half of September sees second lowest number of rural fires since 2013

Portugal has recorded 7,097 rural fires since the beginning of the year, resulting in 33,003 hectares of burnt area, the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) indicated on Tuesday.

With data up to September 15, the ICNF’s provisional report on rural fires states that, when comparing 2023 with the last 10 years, there were 40% fewer rural fires and 64% less area burnt than the annual average for the corresponding period.
