In all, 57 firefighters, supported by 15 vehicles, were drafted in to fight the flames when the Algarve’s first forest fire of the year broke out in scrubland in Bordeira, in the concelho of Aljezur last Sunday. A source indicated that the fire started at around 3pm, and was the result of an illegal bonfire. The firefighters were apparently hampered in their efforts because the blaze broke out in an area that is difficult to reach, and had to use bulldozers to access the source of the fire. A spokesperson from Aljezur Câmara told The Resident: “At the moment we are unable to say exactly how much land was burned.”
