After a very successful first for Lagoa – the Algarve Bonfire Night on November 8 – a cheque to the amount of €1,000, raised at the event, was handed over to the Lagoa firefighters on Monday.
Algarve Resident Editor Inês Lopes and Penelope Best, Head of Primary at the International School of the Algarve, visited the fire station to deliver the cheque.
Representing the bonfire’s organising entities, they were received by the Lagoa Bombeiros Commandant Vítor Rio Alves and second-in-command Nuno Bento, who were grateful for the donation and said it will be used to purchase much-needed equipment for the fire station.
Speaking to the Resident in October prior to the bonfire night, Commandant Vítor Rio praised the Algarve’s foreign community: “Although it hurts me to say this as a Portuguese citizen, most times it is the foreign communities, especially the British, that organise these kinds of events.”
The region’s first Bonfire Night brought together hundreds of families from all over the Algarve to enjoy this very British tradition at the Fatacil park.
Organised by the International School of the Algarve in conjunction with the Algarve Resident, as part of the newspaper’s 25th anniversary, the night was described as “amazing” and a perfect way to forge a new tradition for the Fatacil grounds.
Plans are already in place for next year’s Algarve Bonfire Night. Watch this space!
