Forest fires in the Algarve between January 1 and August 15 have destroyed a smaller area of land than in the same period last year.
According to the latest report presented by the National Forestry Authority (AFN), about 62 hectares were affected this year compared with 78 hectares in 2010.
All the fires reported to date have occurred in forest areas, with fire fighters having to deal with a total of 28 large fires and 198 small fires (burnt area less than one hectare), the total down by four on last year.
