OPERATION DELTA, a fire fighting and prevention initiative in Portugal, ended on October 15 with the Minister of Internal Administration, Rui Pereira, praising the efforts of those involved.
Rui Pereira said that the total area of land destroyed by fire this year decreased by 30 per cent in comparison to 2007.
The secretary of state for civil protection said that the government would be focusing on other areas of civil protection in 2009 such as flooding and search and rescue efforts as effective measures to improve fire protection were clearly in place now.
