A 51-year-old firefighter died today after sustaining serious burns while battling flames in Valença,in the northern Minho region, on August 29.
The firefighter, Fernando Reis, was under the care of the Coimbra University Hospital and had burn injuries on 19% of his body when he passed away.
This loss comes only two days after an 18-year-old fireman died after suffering serious burns in a forest fire in Serra do Caramulo, in the north of the country. The young man, Bernardo Cardoso, was admitted in hospital on August 29, but did not recover from his injuries. The same fire also killed 21-year old firefighter Cátia Pereira Dias.
This was the seventh firefighter killed in Portugal this year whilst fighting fire.
