Monchique was ravaged by the largest fire in the council this year on Wednesday, August 19.
It took 136 firefighters and 43 vehicles, including helicopters, to fight the fire, which started in the Arriqueta area at 3pm when thermometers registered temperatures of 30ºC.
Mild wind meant that the fire spread quickly and soon firefighters were combating two fronts, taking five hours to put out the flames.
The area destroyed by the fire has not yet been announced by the authorities.
In 2003, the same area had been completely destroyed by summer fires.
