Unemployed members of the community will be participating in fire prevention programmes in the municipality of Monchique.
They will not replace Bombeiros and will not be fighting fires directly but instead will be responsible for the maintenance of fire fighting equipment, the monitoring of the area and management of fire prevention, including the clearing of scrub land.
Monchique Câmara has invested €19,000 in the programme to protect Monchique from forest fires.
