Fire-fighter death toll hits eight

A 25-year old fireman from Miranda do Douro, Bragança, died on September 6 after spending a month in the hospital with second and third degree burns affecting 70% of his body.

He was the eighth firefighter killed in Portugal this year while in action.

The previous day, a 51-year-old fireman also died after sustaining serious burns while battling flames in Valença, in the northern Minho region.

Fernando Reis was under the care of the Coimbra University Hospital and had burn injuries to 19% of his body.

His loss came only two days after an 18-year-old fireman died after suffering serious burns in a forest fire in Serra do Caramulo, in the north of the country. The young man, Bernardo Cardoso, was admitted to hospital but failed to recover from his injuries. The same fire also killed 21-year old fire-fighter Cátia Pereira Dias.
