The second ‘large’ fire of the season broke out recently in Caliços, a small area located between Armação de Pêra and Alcantarilha, in the Concelho of Silves. A total of 12 men and three fire engines from the Silves and Lagoa Bombeiros stations were called when the fire started. The blaze, which apparently originated from a dry bush, reached alarming proportions due to the high temperature. “Luckily, no homes or vegetation were harmed in the fire because it broke out in an isolated place,” one bombeiro explained at the scene. The Bombeiros have revealed that several small fires around the Algarve have broken out in the last two weeks due to the hot weather, but are confident in their abilities and working hard to ensure that none of these small blazes explode into devastating fires.
