Emergency services were called to tackle a fire on Wednesday which, at the time of going to press, had already burnt a five hectare area of dry scrubland between Rua do Canada, the road connecting Lagoa and Sesmarias and Rua da Lagoa, behind the Intermarché supermarket.
Bombeiros from Messines, Lagoa, Silves and Albufeira were assisted by the Civil Protection helicopter in fighting the fire, which started at around 12.40pm according to the Bombeiros on site.
“We do not yet know the cause of the fire but we are working together to get it under control,” said a member of the Bombeiros. He added: “We have already used all the water we had brought with us and will be refilling to continue with the fire fighting.”
At the time the Algarve Resident went to press on Wednesday the Bombeiros were still at the scene.
“We are all exhausted and I have walked more than three kilometres with all the equipment to try and put out the flames and stop them from spreading further or even onto the road,” said the Bombeiros member.
