Nine Portuguese districts have been placed on maximum fire alert today as winds whip the country, while more than 50 regions face an elevated risk. The news, coming from the institute of sea and atmosphere, IPMA, says districts most at risk are Viseu in the north and Faro in the south. This means the entire Algarve is on maximum alert.
Elsewhere, fire stations are at the ready throughout the Alentejo and interior.
IPMA’s calculations are based on air temperature, humidity and wind speed over the past 24 hours.
Since the weekend, the wind has been fierce up and down the country
With temperatures soaring also, Évora is the country’s hottest town of the day (31º), followed by Beja, Coimbra and Castelo Branco.
