Smokers take heed! Any of you caught tossing a fag end into the street – or any public place – could be fined anything up to €200 from tomorrow (Wednesday).
The law passed in July (click here) has finally been published in State newspaper Diário da República, technically calling time of litter bugs who add to toxic waste piling up in the environment.
Practically however there is a year-long ‘transitory period’, to allow councils and businesses time to provide the necessary bins for smokers to throw their butts into – and for smokers themselves to finally ‘get with the programme’.
