The MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas staged the deciding super-featherweight clash between bitter Mexican rivals Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera last Saturday night. Barrera lost out on a split decision in 2000 while the current WBC champion, Morales, lost his 100% record to a controversial verdict two years later. Both fighters and all neutral observers were hoping for a more clear-cut result this time around. The judges scored the first six rounds evenly – 10-9 or 9-10 either way, although Barrera showed the more accurate, penetrating punches. Things stayed more or less the same in the following six rounds. Tiredness crept in, flaying punches failed to connect but Morales did rock his enemy in the last. Barrera got the verdict but nothing is resolved. A draw, no more, was just.
