Final curtain – World Cup

World Cup || Germany beat Argentina 1-0 deep into extra time to become the first European nation to lift the World Cup on South American soil last Sunday night.
Exactly 60 years after the ‘Miracle of Bern’ handed post-war Germany its first success on the biggest stage, a solitary Mario Götze strike ensured that manager Joachim Löw’s men drew level with Italy’s all-time four trophy haul, adding to the interim tournament wins in 1974 and 1990.
Brazil did not manage to improve significantly on their 7-1 semi-final drubbing when again beaten 3-0 by Holland in the third place consolation match, a result which finally saw host nation manager Luis Felipe Scolari vacate his post.
At the same time, Argentina’s Lionel Messi received the top player award while Colombian striker James Rodriguez took home the Golden Boot for his six-goal scoring spree. Football fans will now have to wait four years until the biggest show on earth returns with Russia 2018.
