Fill up and run

The number of drivers filling up their cars with fuel and driving off without paying is on the increase.

According to the National Association of Fuel Retailers (ANAREC), every day more than 130 drivers don’t pay for their fuel.

António Amaral, president of ANAREC, said: “They use many different techniques, from false licence plates to using gas stations without surveillance system.”

The losses to fuel station owners are running at around €240,000 per month.
