Filipa Pato Baga & Touriga Nacional

Filipa Pato Baga & Touriga Nacional

Bairrada winemaker Filipa Pato is well known for her “ensaios” (experiments), breaking the mould with different blends. As I’ve said in this column in the past, I’m a great fan of her wines and this one, whilst hardly an adventurous experiment, is a good example.
The Bairrada region’s traditional red grape Baga (75%) is blended with Portugal’s most highly regarded grape Touriga Nacional (25%), to make a wine that really expresses the traditional style of Bairrada; dry and medium bodied from the predominant Baga but with the richness of the Touriga adding depth and a touch of fruitiness to the palate.
The wine is fermented half in stainless steel and half in French oak, then oak-aged – but apart from softening the tannins, the oak is almost unnoticeable.
Priced at around €7 in supermarkets, this is a smooth and easy-drinking wine presenting excellent value for money. Great with roast chicken.
