CONTINUING ITS fight against cancer and its support of cancer sufferers, the Associação Oncológica do Algarve (AOA), the Algarve oncology association, is staging awareness seminars at Junta de Freguesia offices across the region.
The aim behind these sessions is to alert the general public to the importance of prevention and early detection of breast cancer, namely by taking part in the breast screening programme set up by the AOA, in conjunction with the Algarve health authority and Algarve university.
The first sessions were held in Alferce, Marmelete and Monchique at the beginning of this month and, according to the AOA there was a good response. The public were receptive and many questions were asked about the screening programme and the diagnosis of breast cancer. It was explained that the screening programme is directed at women registered at their local health centre, resident in the Algarve and aged between 50 and 65.
This week, the AOA team will be visiting Aljezur with the next sessions being held at the Junta de Freguesia do Rogil on March 4, at 2.30pm and then at the Junta de Freguesia de Odeceixe the same day at 4.30pm.
The AOA’s mobile mammography unit has been traveling across the region during the past year, stopping in each borough at centros de saúde, offering a complimentary screening service. The schedule has been altered recently, the new dates are as follows:
March 26: Monchique
April 9: Aljezur
April 17: Vila do Bispo
May 2: Lagos
June 12: Portimão
September 3: Faro
