Fifth rainiest September since 1931

Last month has been declared the fifth rainiest September since 1931 by the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
In its weather bulletin for last month, the institute described September as “extremely rainy” with “precipitation levels way above average”.
IPMA revealed that the average amount of rainfall was 112.6 millimetres, topped only by Septembers in 1931, 1932, 1949, 1965 and 1999.
“The amount of precipitation was, on average, two to eight times higher than what is normal in September,” said the institute, with “Lisbon, the Setúbal peninsula and Évora registering the highest amount of monthly rainfall since records were kept”.
IPMA’s bulletin also reveals that while the month’s average maximum temperature was 26.27ºC – very similar to what is normally registered – the average minimum temperature was higher than normal – 21.74ºC.
