FIESA opens for last time in Pêra

FIESA, the Algarve’s famous sand sculpture festival, will be opening this Friday (March 20), two months earlier than usual.

The announcement came with the news that it will be the last year the festival is to be held in Pêra – with the location of the next festival being kept firmly under wraps.

Meantime, this year’s event will almost be the same as last year’s, with a few ‘novelties’. The main theme is music, featuring sculptures of artists and musicians like Amy Winehouse, BB King, Jimmy Page, Lady Gaga, Frank Zappa, Bono and even Mozart and Beethoven.

As always, around 40,000 tons of sand will be used to create the extraordinary works, which stay on display on the 15,000 square metre site until October.

This year, tickets will cost €9 for adults and €4.50 for children between the ages of six and 12 (up to sixes go free). Seniors are entitled to a 15% discount.

Fiesa will open every day at 10am and close at 7pm until June 1. Opening hours thereafter are extended to 10pm between June 2-July 14, to midnight between July 15-September 15, and then revert to 8pm between September 16-October 25.
