Fewer smokers

The number of smokers in Portugal has fallen by five per cent since the new tobacco laws came into force in January last year.

According to Portugal’s health minister, Ana Jorge, the number of smokers has reduced by a total of around 90,000.

A national health inquiry conducted between 2005/2006 revealed that the total number of smokers in the country was 1.8 million.

Ana Jorge said: “28 per cent of smokers have changed their smoking habits, smoking around nine less cigarettes per day.”
