Fewer oranges

Orange production in the Algarve has dropped significantly, with groves occupying 12% less agricultural land than they did 10 years ago.

The preliminary data collected from the latest census of agriculture carried out by the National Statistics Institute shows that orange production in the region, representing 70% of the whole regional citrus production, has lost importance.

In the Algarve, between 250,000 and 350,000 tonnes of citrus fruit are produced annually.

The Algarve’s citrus production accounts for 70% of the national citrus sector.
