Fewer inhabitants

Portugal has seen the eurozone’s largest population decline in the last two years.

In January 2010, Portugal had 10,637,713 inhabitants while in the same month this year 95,873 fewer people lived in the country (-1%).

Fewer births are being indicated as the main reason for the population decrease.

The number of babies born in 2010 was 101,381 while in 2011 only 96,856 births were registered. The downward trend is expected to continue. More emigrants and fewer immigrants have also contributed to the declining population.
