Festive season saw 26 killed in over 7,000 road accidents

Portugal’s road safety operation over the Christmas and New Year registered 26 deaths – three more than in 2022 – in more than 7,000 accidents. The figures relate to the period between December 15, 2023 and January 2, 2024. There were equally 125 serious injuries and 2,049 minor injuries. Said the road safety authority: “Compared to the same period in 2022/2023, there was a 13% increase in the number of fatalities and a 6% increase in the number of serious injuries”. Patrícia Gaspar, secretary of state for civil protection, admits the figures are “not comforting in any way”.
